Hesstech Wins 2004 NJDEP Recycling Industry Award
October 13, 2004 – Hesstech, an environmentally conscious electronics, computer and laboratory equipment recycling and Asset Management Company located in Edison (Middlesex County) New Jersey, has been recognized by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP). Hesstech has been awarded the NJDEP Recycling Industry Award for 2004. The criteria to win this award were based upon a company's ability to make a significant contribution toward achieving the state's recycling goals. Other criteria included supporting and promoting local or regional recycling programs. Companies were also judged based upon innovative processes, services, or collection methods.
Hesstech President, David Zimet, was responsible for developing and managing New Jersey's first ongoing government funded demanufacturing pilot project to study the toxic characteristics of the electronics waste stream, before starting Hesstech in 1997. Originally located in a 16,000 square foot facility Sayreville with only a few employees, Hesstech now employs more than 30 full time employees and operates from a 50,000 square foot facility in Edison, New Jersey facility. Hesstech's goal is to balance economic processing solutions with sound environmental principals along with offering comprehensive data security and cradle-to-grave documentation.
Hesstech serves a broad range of clients ranging from Fortune 500 companies to state and local government agencies. Recently Hesstech supported Middlesex County's Consumer Drop-Off Program for thermometers. This project was a success, as 271 Mercury thermometers were collected from 133 households and replaced with environmentally friendly digital thermometers. Hesstech facilitated the safe disposal of the Mercury, which is toxic to the environment.
Hesstech has earned a reputation not only as an industry leader, but also as a leading advocate for the environment. "Entering the recycling industry and providing solutions to improve the environment came naturally to me. The next step was to listen to our clients and understand their needs. This understanding has catapulted Hesstech to a level of service our clients trust while offering both environmentally sound solutions that also take Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) into consideration." said Zimet.
Hesstech has a self-imposed zero-landfill policy to demonstrate the company's commitment to the environment. Hesstech maintains a no-export policy of non-working equipment to show an understanding of the importance of their role in the global community.
Employment opportunities and benefits are an important part of Hesstech's commitment to serve the community by creating job opportunities with industry leading wages and benefits. "It's almost impossible to compete with exporters who avoid American labor and ship equipment to underdeveloped countries for a fraction of the cost to process. We are committed to building a business the old fashion way by treating customers and employees like family and standing firm in our belief that integrity will be more valued then the company looking for the easy dollar", said Zimet.
In 2001, Mr. Zimet began development of the STAR SystemSM; a software application designed to link all phases of asset tracking, resale, recycling and disposal. The system includes industry leading online reporting and asset management tools being currently being utilized by Fortune 500 companies as the primary database for the cradle to grave documentation of company-wide electronic assets including but not limited to IT and laboratory equipment. "This is a relatively new and growing industry; at Hesstech we try to do everything with the future in mind." "We are going to continue invest adequate resources to supply economical industry leading tools for managing and tracking the total lifecycle of electronic business assets", said Zimet.
Hesstech's plans for the future include expansion of the Edison facility in 2005. The company has also developed a network of regional collection depots, which service Hesstech's clients throughout the United States, and is planning to expand to multiple nationwide locations.
