Originally syndicated and released in July 2007, IDC - a leading
technology research organization, published a study commissioned by Dell about the
Asset Disposal Industry. More than 1000 organizations across countries were surveyed
as to the views and practices in asset disposal. Reinforcing much of the existing research,
a majority of companies still do not utilize third-party disposition. The study found
that only 1/3 do, although, it was noted that this number is growing uniformly.
Key drivers for growth were concerns about data security (particularly in North
America and Germany) and environmental regulations (primarily in Europe).
Banks, public sector and healthcare firms were the most aware of asset
disposition needs and more regularly turned to external vendors. Home business and
SMB were the least aware of recycling policies and requirements and tended not to
utilize external firms.
Larger organizations having more than 10,000 employees were more
likely to use a third party firm, while smaller organizations, those with less than
100 employees, were not. 65% of larger organizations were adopting asset disposal
policies and working with vendors, as opposed to a significantly small percentage
of smaller organizations.
A major reason cited for not using third-party firms centered
around data security (fears about liability transfer and the like) and the lack
of trust in vendors capabilities and claims. It was noted that many firms were
reluctant to engage vendors because they were uninformed about how to select one.
The trend is definitely moving in favor of adopting both a disposal
policy and utilizing external vendors. Greater education, awareness, and increasing
regulations are creating the need for implementing processes, metrics, and vendor
selection/use practices.
