Originally scoffed at when it was first introduced, Green IT is no longer only
part of a company's corporate and social repsonsibility strategy. CIOs have
found that they can save money by implementing specific Green intitiatives.
Sara Driscoll reports in
an article in eWeek's Channel Insider
that Green IT may be the next big thing in IT since Y2K.
VARs need to pay attention to the hype surrounding Green IT and recognize the value
of going green
if they want to effectively sell it to their customers.
Several factors make Green IT especially attractive at this time:
- As governments
continue to crack-down on carbon emissions, they are increasingly regulating
businesses as a way to meet their goals.
- Green technology is an attractive way to gain VC money.
- Buyers are increasingly using Green IT credentials as a factor in their purchasing
decisions.
- CIOs can save money through such Green IT initiatives as virtualization, server consolidation,
cooler processing, video conferencing, electronics recycling and asset management.
VARs that believe and promote Green IT open an avenue for new customers and new deals.
