A recent incident involving a stolen laptop from an AT&T employee highlights
the problems of deficient data security and privacy procedures.
On May 15th, an AT&T employee had a laptop stolen from his car containing
AT&T management compensation information, names,
Social Security numbers, and salary and bonus information.
This sensitive personal data was not encrypted. The laptop contained only pawssword protection
which is insufficient as a security measure.
Data security and sanitization continues to be a much-overlooked aspect of many businesses'
processes. Poor data security practices leave the door wide open for data theft and data loss
to occur.
Refer to the Network World article for more details on AT&T's response to the incident.
