According to a survey conducted by Green Electronics Daily,
nearly twice as many state and city legislatures have considered electonic waste
laws so far in 2008 as have in the previous four years combined.
18 state and city legislatures have, or are currently considering, e-waste legislation.
Typically, the laws are making the electronics makers responsible for the collection,
disposal and recycling of their products.
Here is a summary of which states have taken action so far this year:
- New Jersey, Oklahoma, Virginia,
West Virginia and New York City: passed e-waste laws
- New Hampshire and New Mexico: passed less-comprehensive bills
- Missouri and Illinois: poised to enact legislation
- Rhode Island, Massachusetts, North Carolina,
and Vermont: bills pending
- Hawaii, Indiana, Wisconsin,
Nebraska, and New York: legislation failed
