WINK News, based in Ft. Myers, was able to easily recover personal information
from used hard drives they purchased on eBay.
The news station purchased 10 hard drives on eBay for $50 and took them
to a computer expert who was able to recover a vast array of personal information
including bank account numbers, credit cards, social security numbers and more.
The data was traced to customer information from major retailers
including Sears and Giant Foods.
Senator Bill Nelson (D-FL), himself a recent victim of identity theft, is sponsoring a bill
requiring companies to have a written plan for successfully destroying personal information.
Their investigation serves as a reminder of how simple it is for identity thieves to recover
the data they need from hard drives that have not been effectively sanitized.
