The National Center for Electronic Recycling (NCER) has released a
report showing that electronic recycling volume increased 7% per capita in 2008 according to its Per
Capita Collection Index (PCCI).
The report is based on the results of 6 collection programs of varying scopes
spread throughout the nation that have been tabulated for the past three years.
The collection areas covered include three state-wide programs (California, Maine, Delaware),
one large municipality program (Hennepin County, MN) and two small municipality programs
(Branford, CT and Frederick County, VA).
The increase is based on comparing the year over year per capita averages of the 6
collection areas. The 2008 index increased to 4.5 from 4.2 the previous year.
A closer look at the results shows that much of the increase has come from the
larger statewide programs while the localized programs have remained relatively
flat over the past three years. As the 6 regions are weighted equally in the index, the actual nationwide increase
is likely larger than 7%.
