Recycling Awards

In 2004, Hesstech, an industry leader, providing electronics, computer and laboratory equipment recycling, and asset management services, received the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) Recycling Industry Award. The criteria to win this award were based upon a company’s ability to make a significant contribution toward achieving the state’s recycling goals. Other criteria included supporting and promoting local or regional recycling programs. Companies were also judged on innovative processes, services or collection methods.

In 2007, Hesstech was recognized at the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Earth Day event (NJDEP), celebrating the 20th anniversary of the enactment of the State’s Source Separation and Recycling Act. The Commissioner of the NJDEP, Senator Robert Smith, and former Governor Jim Florio presented Hesstech with a Certificate of Appreciation at the awards ceremony. Hesstech was recognized for its unwavering commitment to raise the bar and set an example for environmentally sound recycling practices through innovative technologies and service offerings. Most recently Hesstech offered Middlesex County College students and teachers with a free and environmentally safe way to recycle computer equipment

Federal Contract

The U.S. Government buys seven percent of the world's computers. In fiscal year 2005 alone, the EPA expects federal agencies to spend almost $60 billion on Information Technology equipment, software, infrastructure. and services. The government disposes of about 10,000 computers every week, a significant number of which are ending up in storage closets, warehouses and landfills, or overseas where generally the environmental standards are lower. Electronic equipment contains toxic materials such as lead, mercury, chromium, cadmium, and beryllium, which, if mishandled, could be released into the environment. This complex waste stream poses challenging management issues and potential liability concerns for federal facilities.

In an effort to address the government's electronics waste disposal issues, the EPA has awarded its first contracts to help all federal agencies in the environmentally responsible disposal of computers and other used electronic equipment. Called Government Wide Acquisition Contracts (GWACs) for Recycling Electronics and Asset Disposition (READ) services, they provide federal agencies with a dependable method of properly recycling and disposing of excess or obsolete electronic equipment.

After reviewing responses from more than 140 organizations nationwide, contracts were awarded to seven recycling companies, including Hesstech. The basic contracts will run for one year with up to four possible one-year extensions, with a combined potential value of up to nine million dollars. Contractors must maintain an audit trail to the equipment's final destination to ensure that reclamation and recycling efforts are documented. The contracts will also maximize revenues from usable electronic equipment currently in storage through a Share-in-Savings (SiS) program. Under SiS, the contractor will attempt to identify opportunities to save costs associated with recycling efforts and share those savings with federal agencies to offset the contractor's recycling costs.

Case Study: Large Pharmaceutical Company Merger/Acquisition
Project: Consolidation Project

Overview

In 2001 a large pharmaceutical company announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire another large pharmaceutical company for $7.8 billion, in a step intended to strengthen their business.

Recognizing the value of product stewardship, the purchasing firm required a solution for retiring used assets, but needed strategic expertise to manage the tie-in of standard retirement procedures with best markets for resale and redeployment. To provide that expertise, the purchasing firm requested the assistance of Hesstech, LLC to oversee the process of decommissioning and reuse for a full-line of biological and chemical laboratory equipment as well as all the company’s IT assets. The scope of the project included the deinstallation, packing and removal, transport and processing of equipment from five campuses, covering a total of thousands of offices and more than 960 laboratories.

Project Objectives

  • Identify and Organize Physical Inventory
  • Determine Appropriate Disposition Methods
  • Host Buyer and Client Viewings
  • Redeploy or Demanufacture Inventory
  • Create a Traceable Record to Provide Accountability for all Assets

Value Delivered

As a result of Hesstech's services, the client realized a peripheral value of more than $1.5 million in cost-avoidance by reallocating used assets. Resale of reusable IT equipment by Hesstech generated revenues of more than $60,000. In adherence to project objectives, Hesstech provided detailed per-unit inventory reports identifying each piece of equipment retired or redeployed during the project. Compliance with federal and state regulations governing disposal of equipment requiring chain of custody tracking was also provided by Hesstech.
